Saint Pierre et Miquelon
We’re in France. You might be wondering how that can be, since we were in Canada yesterday, but it’s true. Welcome to the French island collective known as Saint-Pierre et Miquelon (MEEK-uh-lon).
We had brekkie and hopped the shuttle into town, only to find everything closed. Most places only open in the afternoons on Mondays, perhaps because the once-a-week cargo ship arrives in port on Monday morning. Regardless, we bailed out after a quick walkabout and went back to the ship, took a nap, and had lunch. I got a burger and dog from the Dive In bar near the pool on the ship.
Then we hopped back on the shuttle bus and back to town. Like many seaside towns, Saint Pierre is not afraid of colour on its buildings.
As cute as the town is (and it is!), there’s not much for a visitor to do if they only have a few hours. There are a handful of shops and a few cafés, but that’s about it. Shopping here is expensive, because everything they have is imported and then there’s the Euro -to - Canadian Dollar conversion. A t-shirt I liked would’ve cost me $43 CAD. I liked it, but I didn’t like it enough to pay $43 for it.
After making the round through town a second time and poking our noses in a few shops, we had had enough - Rob took the shuttle back and I opted to make the 1.6 km trek on foot for a few extra photos.
Saw this logo on a few buildings. At first glance, it looked like the Major League Baseball logo.
The hills on the way back to the ship were covered with purple flowers. Rob said that it’s wild heather. I said, “I know one of those!”
(Hi, Heather!)
Back on board for yet another nap. I’m afraid my body is going to get use to this. Up in time for dinner.
Had Thai Beef salad with pickled papaya, which was excellent and fettuccini with short rib bolognese, also very good.
Then it was time for music trivia - tonight’s theme was show tunes and since we had Rob on our team, we had a really good chance. We ended up getting 33 out of 34, but one team got all 34. No biggie. The big show tonight was “Feel the Beat” which featured lots of dancing. It was pretty good as well.
Then it was time to suffer through Grace at the piano. Tonight’s monstrosities included Guns ‘n’ Roses, Billy Joel, Elton John, and one of the most cringe-worthy renditions of “American Pie” I’ve ever heard. Hate to say it, but knowing before we got there that it was going to be tragically bad made it almost fun. I haven’t laughed so hard in ages. I think she’s got something of a cult following, because her shows are well attended and it’s the same people every night.
Back to the room and enjoyed the moon over the sea outside our cabin. And that’s about it for today.
